The Simplest Way To Delete Locked Files

cannot delete file

*Updated 7/5/2010 to even simpler method*

"Cannot delete {filename}: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

How often do you see this message? Tried closing every single program on your PC and the file is still locked?

1) After installing Unlocker, right click on your locked file and select 'Unlocker'. In the example here I use Microsoft Word to open a file called hello.txt so that it is locked.

     unlocker

2) Unlocker will show you all the programs/processes that are currently locking the file. Select the one you wish to unlock or just click 'Unlock All', after that you may proceed to delete the file as usual.

3) You're done!

This method is much simpler than the one below because it doesn't require a system restart :)

Unlocker is used in a series of guides in this site:

Only use the below method if Unlocker fails to delete your file (very stubborn file..)

Software: EMCO MoveOnBoot

1) The method used is simple, it will help you to delete/move/rename any file you choose during startup (before the file gets locked by any services/applications)

2) Choose the action you wish to perform.

     delete lock files 1

3) Select your file/folder and click OK to add it to the Boot Actions List.

4) The process will be completed in the next Windows Start Up.

     delete lock files 2

Cool!

Used to always use restart in safe mode. A real nuisance, and further have to manually hunt for the files. Good stuff! =)
